Great Outdoors

• A hike on the Appalachian Trail which can be accessed a few yards only from the cabin in the Shannondale area, south of Harper's Ferry (see topographic map of the Appalachian Trail from Shannondale to Harper's Ferry)
• A leisurely paced canoe trip down the Potomac River or a more challenging introduction to whitewater rafting on the Shenandoah with one of the many specialized river & trail outfitters that operate in Harper's Ferry (reservations required; group rates are usually available):

• A Horseback Ride from Elk Mountain Trails through the Blue Ridge Mountain to the banks of the Potomac and Shenandoah River;

American History and Scenic Byways

• A visit to nearby Harper's Ferry National Historical Park, an area of great natural beauty rich in Civil War history (also check out the new exhibit on Merriweather Lewis at Harper's Ferry)
• Across the Potomac from Harper's Ferry, a ride to Antietam National Battlefield following the Maryland Scenic Byway (download printable map)
• The George Washington Heritage Trail, a year-round scenic drive through the Eastern Panhandle counties of West Virginia on a designated National Scenic By Way. Twenty one separate National Register Historic Districts and 126 National Register Historic Sites are located here (a printable map and details on individual sites are included in above website)
• A trip to Luray Caverns

Dining, Wining and Entertainment

• A casino-style evening at The Charles Town Races and Slots, featuring 3500 slots, games, thoroughbred horse races, several restaurants and live band performances every Friday and Saturday night from 9PM to 1:30AM
• A romantic three-course lunch or a seven-course candlelit dinner in a beautiful and elegant setting at Hillbrook Inn near Charles Town, WV (check schedule; reservation required)
• An outdoor organic culinary experience overlooking the Potomac River at Patowmack Farm in Lovettsville, VA (check schedule; reservation required)
• The Loudoun Wine Trail with a selection of wine tasting and special events at nearby Breaux Vineyards, Hillsborough Vineyards and Doukenie Winery; or the Blue Ridge Wine Way a bit further South
