Summertime is for the river

Ponder the legacy of John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which preserves much of the Civil War village. Then tackle the Shenandoah or Potomac river by tube, raft, kayak, or canoe. Unless the Shenandoah is swollen from heavy rain, it's ideal for kids and novice paddlers. Several outfitters run trips in the area. Make reservations as far in advance as possible; many trips are booked quickly.
