Hiking
on the Appalachian Trail is very convenient from THE OUTPOST since the trail is directly
accessible from Eagle's Nest Road. A selection of trail
maps and hiking ressources await you at the cabin. Specialized
readings can also be found and purchased online through the Appalachian Trail Store.
Summer
through early fall is probably the best period to plan kayak,
canoe or white water rafting trips on the Shenandoah and
Potomac rivers near Harpers' Ferry. Reservations
are strongly recommended ahead of time through one of the local
outfitters listed on the next page of our website.
If
you own a kayak or a canoe, the Shenandoah River can be
accessed near the cabin from the Shannondale Springs Wildlife
State Management Area (along Mission Road, at the bottom
of our mountain). Additionally, the river provides excellent
fishing for smallmouth bass, channel catfish, rock bass and panfish.
Hunting
is also excellent for white-tailed deer, squirrel and raccoon
in the Shannondale Springs Wildlife State Management Area.
Turkey, mourning dove, bobwhite quail, woodcock and waterfowl
provide additional hunting opportunities. Furbearers include
red and gray fox, opossum, skunk, mink, muskrat and beaver. Camping
and open fires are prohibited. Please keep in mind that this
area is owned by West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
This means hunters and fishers should check for necessary licenses
and permits.
